To implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the national action of urban renewal, the academic seminar with the theme of “The strategies of Guangdong urban renewal pursuing high-quality development" was successfully held in Dongfenglu Campus of Guangdong University of Technology on May 31, 2023. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Guangdong University of Technology, Guangdong Province Old Town Old Factory and Old Village Recreation Association, and the Urban Regeneration Committee of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies.
The guests attending the seminar are Professor Yang Jianqiang (Chairman of the Urban Regeneration Committee of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies, URCCSUS) from Southeast University, Professor Huang Ling (deputy chairman of URCCSUS) from Chongqing University, Chief Clerk Liu Xihua from Building Energy Conservation Department of Guangdong Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Professor Zhou Chunshan from Sun Yat-sen University. Professor Ye Yuyao (Deputy Director) from the Guangzhou Institute of Geography, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, Mr. Yu Laishun (core member of the leadership team) from the Guangdong Land Development and Renovation Center, Mr. Tian Guangming (Secretary-General) and Mr. Gong Junwei (chief supervisor) from Guangdong Three-Old Recreation Association, Mr. Wang Weiwen (Secretary of the Party Committee), Prof. Cai Yunnan (Dean), Prof. Jiang Haiyan (vice dean), AProf. Liao Kaihuai (vice dean), and AProf. Wu Rong from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning. More than 100 people attended the meeting, including representatives of the member enterprises of the Three-Old Recreation Association, the planning industry, as well as teachers and students of the Guangdong University of Technology.

The seminar was presided over by Dean Cai Yunnan, and Wang Weiwen, Secretary of the Party Committee of the faculty, delivered a welcome speech. The meeting is divided into two parts: theme sharing and academic lectures.
In the theme-sharing session, Prof. Cai Yunnan introduced the strategic research and consulting project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering "Guangdong Urban Renewal Development Strategy" from the aspects of theoretical framework construction, fact research, planning research, policy research, etc. The thinking and content framework of the research report "Strategy" analyzed the current problems of urban renewal in Guangdong Province, and put forward countermeasures and suggestions for the future development strategy of Guangdong's urban renewal. AProf. Liao Kaihuai took the title of "Comprehensive Benefit Evaluation of Guangdong's ‘Three-Olds’ Recreation" and introduced the situation and characteristics of the "Three-Olds" recreation in Guangdong Province since 2008 from three aspects: the basic characteristics, overall effectiveness, and benefits evaluation. AProf. Wu Rong introduced the development strategy of people's livelihood security and green low-carbon urban renewal development strategy from the aspects of necessity and connotation, current situation and problems, and protection strategies with the title of "Guangdong Urban Renewal People's Livelihood Guarantee and Green and Low-Carbon Development Strategy". Mr. Gong Junwei took "Thinking and Countermeasures on Urban Renewal and Demolition in Guangdong Province" as the title, analyzed the main reasons for the formation of the impasse in the reconstruction and relocation of the "Three-olds" in Guangdong Province, and proposed eighteen measures to break the impasse in the old renovation and relocation suggestion.

During the exchange meeting, the atmosphere of academic discussions was enthusiastic, and the academic guests spoke enthusiastically and communicated actively. Mr. Yu Laishun pointed out that there are market, property rights and mechanism problems in the current pilot project of old reform, and a targeted assessment should be carried out in terms of industry, history and culture. Mr. Liu Xihua shared the latest urban renewal work ideas of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, including the ten major tasks of urban renewal and five supporting items, and proposed that urban physical examination should be included in the urban renewal strategy middle. Researcher Ye Yuyao proposed to sort out the bottleneck problems faced by micro-transformation, and stressed the need to combine historical context with ecology for systematic transformation. Prof. Huang Ling said that while following the differentiated strategic guidance of economic circles, cultural circles, and classification and zoning, attention should be paid to the ability of urban renewal to face comprehensive challenges in the future. Prof. Yang Jianqiang said that Guangdong's urban renewal strategic planning is very important to the future development of China, and emphasized that the linkage between various departments and subjects in urban renewal and urban governance issues should be properly handled in the future. Prof. Zhou Chunshan summarized the problems of insufficient endogenous motivation and imperfect evaluation in urban renewal in the past, and emphasized the importance of organic renewal, public participation and expert demonstration. Mr. Tian Guangming proposed that in the future, the three old recreations and urban renewal in Guangdong Province should continue to deepen on the current urban renewal strategic research framework, and can be carried out based on the characteristics of different cities and more oriented to phased and continuous issues. Finally, Prof. Cai Yunnan, summarized the exchanges between the guests.
In the academic lecture session, Prof. Yang Jianqiang made an academic sharing on the theme of "Historical Development and Practice Exploration of Urban Renewal", and systematically introduced the development overview and trends of international urban renewal, the development process and trajectory of Chinese urban renewal, and deeply analyzed urban renewal the value objectives and tasks of the work, and introduced in detail the practical cases of urban renewal based on multi-dimensional. Prof. Huang Ling made an academic sharing on the theme of "Community Renewal and Community Planning from a Cultural Perspective". She believed that emphasizing culture is the trend of community renewal. She introduced the cultural problems in community renewal and community planning in detail. Cultural cognition and typical cases of community planning, and finally put forward the countermeasures and suggestions for community renewal and community planning led by culture.
